The Wave

A Poem by Deborah Porter and Heaven Williams from Collegiate

Tucked under a shell, hiding from the others,

Moving slowly, I’m engulfed by waves of despair.

Another day passes — feeling smothered.

Then why should any of this be fair?

Waves taking over me. I can’t seem to breathe.

Longing for something that isn’t required,

Feeling in need for an emotional squeeze,

Fiending for something I shouldn’t desire.

I get the acceptance that was needed,

Wondering if I’m good enough

For me to be able to succeed,

This shell is in my way, feeling like handcuffs.

Maybe it is time for me to break free.

There’s something waiting for me in the sea.
