Water, Whiskey, & Wine

Poem by Marquita Williams from central vpa

I inhale deeply from the slow-burning cigarette wrapped between my fingers like roots buried deep within the ground.

The bittersweet burning sensation of whiskey kicks in as it trickles down my throat

The dark moods become a companion and a form of comfort as I try to swim in an ocean that’s already drained.

I would tear my shirt to stop your bleeding.

I’ll just pretend I’m Langston Hughes: “Life is fine, fine as wine, life is fine”.
